The 5 AM Advocate

I’ve always been an early riser. The first to wake up on Christmas Day. First person awake at every sleep over. In high school I started trying to utilize this precious early alone time by going for an early morning ride to wake up. Grabbing my cd player and headphones, I’d dash out the door to the ominous sounds of rain and bells chiming from Black Sabbath.

Every morning for months began exactly this way, flying down a hill over to the neighborhoods close by to ride down every street with the electrifying sounds of Tony Iommi’s guitar searing through the darkness and vanishing in a fog of reverb that seemed to go on into eternity. Most days I’d make it back home and jump back in bed until the sunlight beaming in through my open door woke me back up.

Eventually when I started driving everywhere, I’d do the same thing with the car. Get out onto the road and explore areas of town I’d never been to before before the morning rush would come in and kill the peace of a dead road at dawn.

A lot of times I never knew where I was going, but I’d often end up at the waterfront just in time to watch the sun rise.

Oh, Happy 2025, bby✶
